Kelsey Trail: Elbow Springs to Harrington Lake

Description: A Ridge route over Kelsey Range and Siskiyou Crest. Opportunities to visit several no fish lakes. Connections with other trails is possible when South Fork Smith or Clear Creek are fordable.
Difficulty: Moderate, not the best first hike for a family adventure. Pack water.
Time Needed: Three days; more to explore many features along the way.
Distance: 10.0 miles one way to Harrington Lake.
Starting Elevation: 4,000 ft.
High Elevation: 6,000 ft.
When: For most the season is from May to October; however, for those who can contend with inclement weather, excellent winter trips are possible.
Useage: Light, most during October deer hunting.
Maps: Topographic: Dillon Mt.; Recreation, Klamath National Forest, or Six Rivers National Forest Siskyou Wilderness

Notes:
  • Trail in good condition, in most places, great views, unusual plants, old growth forest animals.
  • Overview of Dillon Creek, a biological corridor connecting Siskiyou, Marble Mtns. and Trinity Alps, is called by some the wildest watershed in northern California. 15% of Summer Steelhead in California come from Dillon Creek.
  • Overview of Clear Creek, especially the rugged Red Mountain country and long views down the wild West Fork.
  • Lakes, but not fishing
  • Many locations within Dillon Creek are considered sacred by Native Americans.
  • U.S. Forest Service. Natural ecosystem dynamics endangered by USFS fire salvage, logging, and related roading in progress.
